Microsoft Exchange Servers being Compromised by IIS Backdoors
- Threat Type:
- N/A
- TLP:
- CLEAR
- CVE:
- N/A
Overview
Threat actors are using malicious Internet Information Services (IIS) web server extensions to backdoor unpatched Microsoft Exchange servers. These modules provide persistent access, harvest credentials, collect information, and deliver additional payloads. A campaign exploiting ProxyShell deployed “FinanceSvcModel.dll” to access mailboxes, execute commands, and steal data. The advisory also describes Gelsemium activity using the SessionManager IIS backdoor after exploiting ProxyLogon, and attacks using the Owowa malicious IIS module.
Affected Technologies
- Microsoft Exchange servers
- Internet Information Services (IIS)
Mitigation and Immediate Actions
- 01
Keep Exchange servers up to date and apply the latest security updates for server components.
- 02
Keep anti-malware and security solutions enabled.
- 03
Review sensitive roles and groups, restrict access to IIS virtual directories, prioritize alerts, and inspect config files and bin folders.
